Why Bristol’s Latest Burlesque Night Is Wonderfully Brilliant

Decadence, delicious drinks, raunchy performers and outrageous drag queens. Burlesque Wonderland is one to check out if you want an awesome night out in Bristol.
The Fleece – usual purveyor of rock acts and indie student nights was transformed into a magical and flamboyant burlesque night with an Alice in Wonderland twist last Saturday night.
We’re not sure when the last time the red carpet was rolled out at The Fleece but it was a great addition to get you in the mood for what was about to come. Upon entry you were handed an Alice in Wonderland themed playing card (which you could exchange for a free glass of prosecco) before you were greeted by the luscious host and owner of Burlesque Wonderland.
The decoration was glorious, The Fleece converted into a magical Alice in Wonderland escapade. Whilst the crowd came fully prepared, an outrageous amount of top hats, rabbit ears and corsets were the order of the night. When you’ve fallen down the rabbit hole after all.
Interspersed with a mixture of saucy comedy from the wonderful compere Lyra Evangelist, the show kicked off with a traditional Burlesque routine from Dee Dee Desire – transformed into Alice. If you’ve never been to a Burlesque show before you might not know what to expect, it’s certainly raunchy but classy at the same time. The ladies themselves are beautiful and look like ‘real’ women – Urban Tiger this is not.
Each performer set the bar higher with each piece but it can argued the singer Em Brulee might have stolen the show, belting out 4 magical ballads to the delight of the crowd.
Halfway through the night, a quick break took place as we were ushered outside where two fire breathers wowed a captive audience of smokers and bemused passers by.
It was time to get back inside for the second half and also try some of the delectable Alice in Wonderland themed cocktails. Give the candy floss martini a try if you get a chance – a blue cocktail for the snapchat generation.
The second half picked off where the first one left off, as renowned Burlesque performer Kitty Kane kicked the proceedings up a gear with a mesmerising rendition as the butterfly.
The night continued as the crowd absorbed each performance. There really wasn’t a low light amongst a stella cast of characters. Topping the evening off, Kitty Kane returned for a dazzling finale in a tea cup which resulted in a massive cheer from the besotted crowd.
All in all this was an incredible night and impressive debut into the Bristol scene from Burlesque Wonderland. The next night takes place on Saturday, January 14th and features a James Bond theme. We’re incredibly excited to see both how The Fleece will be transformed and the level of tuxedos on show.
